March Florida Trivia Question: What is the oldest city in the United States?

Answer: St. Augustine

On the northeast coast of Florida lies a hidden gem of a city called St. Augustine, generally thought of as the oldest city in the United States. It was founded in 1565 by the Spanish and is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental United States.

If you love history then St. Augustine is a city you should definitely include in your Florida travels. There are many options for historic sight seeing, including the famous Castillo de San Marcos fort. A national monument located right in the heart of St. Augustine on Matanzas Bay, the impressive star-shaped fort defended the city from British attack. Other signature landmarks include Fort Matanzas, a smaller fort just south of St. Augustine; the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse; the St. Augustine Lighthouse; and the González-Alvarez House, considered the oldest house in the United States.

St. Augustine also offers beautiful beaches; a historic area with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries; historic hotels and much more.

If you're looking for a day or weekend to get away and take a few steps back in time, St. Augustine will not disappoint.
