This November, whether the kids are off for Thanksgiving break or you’re just craving a quick day trip to somewhere new, head over to Leesburg! The 157-year-old city is the oldest in Lake County and is home to a wealth of activities for the whole family. Read on to find out how Leesburg got started, and what you’ll find there today.

Leesburg’s founder and first permanent settler, Evander Lee, came to the area with his wife and eight children, partially in effort to ease his rheumatism with a change of climate. When he saw what the area had to offer—beautiful scenery, wildlife, plenty of waterways and a pleasant, temperate climate—he chose to stick around. Leesburg was officially incorporated in 1875.

Over the years, Leesburg has developed its own distinct culture, one that thrives on a hometown atmosphere without sacrificing entertainment and community activities. Locals and residents can spend the day at Lake Griffin, take a stroll along Leesburg’s Main Street or choose from favorite dining spots like Takis Greek and Italian and Sonny’s Bar-B-Q. On Saturdays, you can also stop by the Leesburg Saturday Morning Market, a compilation of different vendors, including Kurt’s Crushable Hats and Redditt's Smokehouse Beef Jerky.

This weekend, there’s the Not-So-Westminster-Dog-Show, so be sure to check that out if you’re in the area! Leesburg has something to offer everyone, so whether you’re only in the area for a weekend or are considering picking up and moving, it’s definitely worth a visit.
